BUDAPEST PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION and TAXI

BKK - PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION

Budapest has a very extensive and developed public transportation system. BKK (in Hungarian Budapest Közlekedési Központ) operates buses, trams, trolley buses, metro lines, suburban railway, boat services, funicular, cable chair and even heritage transport. The system is reliable, safe, punctual, covers the whole city and it is cheap with a Hungarian student ID card (obtainable at the Study Abroad office).

For timetables please check BKK’s website

Routes can also be planned on Google maps by selecting the ”Transit” option from the top menu or via BKK's futar (iOS, Android).

How to validate your ticket video

PRICE

For full-time university students, there is a student discount pass currently available for HUF 3450 (approx. 13 USD) that can be used on all public transportation within Budapest.

Please see further information on ticket/pass prices

IMPORTANT!

  • the passes are only valid with a valid Student ID (provided with the Welcome package by their Program Coordinator)
  • Students must have the Student ID with them at all times! Ticket inspectors may ask students to show a valid Student ID if they see that the student travels with a student discount pass. If the student does not have it with him/her, (s)he will get a fine ticket for 16000HUF (approx. 60 USD)
  • Both passes and Student ID have to be valid!
  • If student travels with tickets: (s)he can use the same type of ticket for all forms of public transport in the city but must remember to validate a new ticket at every transfer. If the student gets caught travelling without a valid ticket, (s)he must pay a fine between 8000 or 16 000 HUF. Ticket inspectors wear blue armbands and can appear anywhere at any time.

WHERE TO BUY THEM

  • Ticket vending machines/Kiosks
  • At major hubs – over the counter
  • On the bus/trolley bus only. Tickets can be bought at the first door of the vehicle from the driver. This option is available on most of the buses, however, one single ticket costs 450HUF this case.
